Been A Long Hot Dirty Year.

Another Sunday, another short mix of what I've been listening to. I would say I'm going to do this every Sunday but we all know that making promises on the internet is like a 3 year old saying he won't wet the bed anymore. On a more up to date note I have just returned from the beach where one day was beautiful and the next was something close to doomsday. Needless to say I escaped with only a busted forehead and a dislocated knee, but seriously, that's how intense my family vacations are.
1. "Is There A Ghost" by Band of Horses from the album Cease To Begin {mp3} [BUY CEASE TO BEGIN]
The new Band of Horses is what many of us like to call a "grower' in that it takes some time to find out what makes the record worth a damn. Except for this tremendous first track. Taking the best of U2 and bringing it back down to earth a bit this song just races with a purpose.
2. "The Party Punch" by Oh No! Oh My! from the ep Between the Devil and the Sea {mp3} [BUY DEVIL AND THE SEA]
Two parts Neutral Milk Hotel and one part Daniel Johnston Oh No! Oh My! bluster with sick harmonies that allow everything else to fall away. The two and a half minute mark has you driving in your car whistling like a mental patient who really shouldn't be driving a car in the first place.
3. "Is This What I've Been Waiting For" by Some Girls from the album Crushing Love {mp3} [BUY CRUSHING LOVE]
Ever heard of Juliana Hatfield? Like her? Yeah! Cool! Well she has this little side project called Some Girls. They write 90's pop songs that are good enough to be played in 2007. This song should really be called "Turning 30".
4. "End Of The Affair" by Johnathan Rice from the album Further North {mp3} [BUY FURTHER NORTH]
Here Johnathan Rice sings a duet with his ridiculously hot and talented girlfriend who you think would steal the show. Yet, Rice is no slouch with a croon that makes you happy he just called you sugar. Be sure to also check out the tune "We are all Stuck out in the Desert and We are going to Die"...great stuff.
5. "Sunlight" by Matt Pond PA from the album Last Light {mp3} [BUY LAST LIGHT]
It's not easy watching some one's mistakes. I do it everyday and I can tell you that it takes a toll here and there. In the same instance we all "F" up at times. It's when you can look right past those times that you know you've found someone you can truly be with.
6. "Fall, In A Shade Of Red" by Bedtime {mp3} [BUY BEDTIME]
Said The Gramophone is quite possibly the best music blog out there that actually writes about music. This song and the next are both songs they've written about in the past week or so that I am undeniably obsessed with. Bedtime has that basement feel of a smart band that plays to it's strengths. The piano and guitar here are wonderful as they work towards a crescendo that never quite breaks.
7. "Hey Girl Don't Bother Me" by The Tams {mp3} [BUY THE TAMS]
A song I wish I could sing all the time. Damnit.
8. "Look At Me" by John Lennon from the album Plastic Ono Band {mp3} [BUY PLASTIC ONO BAND]
My personal favorite John Lennon song. Who are we and what are we supposed to do is the question right? Is it better to really attack the dilemma and find some answers? Or is it better to just find what you are through what you do? I'll take the latter.

You never cease to put up a great mix of jams. Love that Oh No! Oh My! one. Try to "unofficially" do this every Sunday.. I'm sure I'm not the one persons Monday morning you have brightened with this :)
Is it ironic that you misspelled "someone" in the sentence "It's not easy watching some one's mistakes"?
That Oh No! Oh My! track is a winner. Thanks for sharing. I agree with rika, you guys should unofficially do this every Sunday.
i love you...
i mean, hello...
i just discovered that i secretly had the ability to put music with a player and such in my blog (after years of blogging, no less) and the process lead me here to your blog and i am gonna do my best to visit and revisit and explore the music you write about... cuz music as i know it has been missing from life as i know it for a while and recently i am finding ways of helping it return and you are one of them so thank you...
yeah, i am usually this way...
anyway, thanks :)
