This is What It's Like, This is What It's Like On a TV

Wednesday, February 28, 2007 1 comments

Last night I went to see Ira Glass at the Boston Opera House on the second stop of his six-city tour. The tour is to promote the new TV adaptation of This American Life. With a startling amount of nerdy charm and charisma Glass managed to give me one of the best shows i have ever been to, music or otherwise. As an added bonus Mates of State provided musical interludes between each act of the performance. If you are familiar with the show you know that every week Ira provides a theme and then the show is further broken into acts, each of which exemplifies the overall theme. Not surprisingly, the theme of the show I attended was "What I Learned from Television".

Mates of State opened with what, as far as i could tell, was a brand new song written specifically for the show. Their lyrics can be a little abstract and hard to take in on the first listen. As a result all I know for sure is the chorus was about "watching TV" hence my supposition that it was written for Ira and company. The second song they played was Like u Crazy minus the stuttering chorus; No "I I I I like you crazy". Instead the perennial cutest couple ever harmonized throughout the chorus. Kori was playing a baby grand piano so they seemed to steer away from some of their more rocking tunes like Ha Ha, For the Actor or Fluke. At one point Ira Glass threw down the gauntlet by stating that NPR needed a sample of exactly 59 seconds of music so that local stations could do their plugs. Furthermore, the 59 seconds had to be preceded and followed by a one second moment of silence. Ira busted out his stopwatch and put the two to the test. Informing everyone that he would be more than happy to stay all night until they got it spot on. They played Think Long...once...for 59 seconds exactly. Then 2 seconds later the crowd cheered. Other songs included the These Days cover and something else...sorry, i cant remember, maybe it was Nature and the Wreck or maybe Goods. Sorry.

As for the non-musical portion of the show, it was equally as amazing. As my friend Karen put it "I don't think I stopped smiling the whole time". Unafraid to make fun of himself, Glass showed outtakes of his new TV show that did nothing but tear down the idea that he is smart and clever. He discussed in length his love of the OC and the shock, amazement, and happiness of hearing himself referenced on the show by Summer, who snidely commented "This American Life? Isn't that that hipster know-it-all show about how fascinating ordinary people are?" After reflecting upon he and his wife singing the theme song together every week, and how it reminds him of everything he loves about life, Mates of State came in on cue with their cover of Phantom Planet's tune California.

Other guests included:
Sarah Vowell, who discussed her history education via TV, primarily using the Happy Days Thanksgiving episode as reference.
Jonathan Goldstein with a hilarious rendition of the Flintstones under the pretense that the show should have been more real and dealt with more emotional issues. It detailed Barney's relationship with Fred and towards the end a drunken Fred calls Barney to inform him that he may have slept with Betty. This is after Barney tells Fred he accidentally ran over Dino and killed him.
Dan Savage, the famous sex advice columnist, explained how he learned "what kind of gay not to be" from TV. Furthermore, he exclaimed that the children's show The Suite Life is quite possibly the most offensive show on television.

The television show premieres on March 22nd on Showtime.
The radio broadcast of the live tour airs on NPR on March 17th and 18th....i think.

Here are the rest of the tour dates:

Thursday March 1st - Chicago Theater, Chicago IL
Wednesday March 7th - Paramount Theater, Seattle WA
Monday March 12th - Royce Hall, Los Angeles CA

I highly recommend going to one of these if it isnt sold out. (i.e. people in Ohio: its worth the drive to Chicago, people out west: how far is Seattle/LA? You've got to be close to one of them.)
p.s. - Mates of State will not be at the LA show.

Here's the trailer for the new TV series:

In The Fading Of The Constellations I Am Growing Strong

Holy Awesome Surprise Batman! Laura Veirs already has a new album coming out on April 10th called Saltbreakers! A little birdie (maybe a Robin?...whoa that was bad) dropped the news last night and then Stereogum jumped all over it today (with another wonderful track I might add). Laura keeps her eyes to the stars again with this effort until the lyrics begin to group and form converstations with just how on the edge we may all be living. Recorded partially at Johnny and June Carter Cash's Tennessee cabin studio as well as producer/bandmate Tucker Martine's (The Decemberists) Seattle studio the album has an immediate presense. Her songs always remind me of beautiful evenings with children running along the backyard chasing fireflies and the collapsing sky.

"Pink Light" by Laura Veirs from the album Saltbreakers {mp3} [Nonesuch Records]
Opening the album with the line “Sorry I was cruel/I was protecting myself/Drifting along with my swords out flying/Tattering my own sails/then I tattered yours too.” is as direct as Veirs gets. The handclaps are also to die for.

Here's a terrific acoustic performance just so you can get a good look at her.

The man Bonnie 'Prince' Billy has a new single out that somehow slipped by me for the wonderful song "Lay & Love". This tune is from his beautiful 2006 effort The Letting Go. The single includes a video for the song as well as a cover of Dylan's "Senor(Tales of Yankee Power)". If you haven't yet and your inclined towards what you hear, go pick up a copy of The Letting Go and you won't be sorry.

The performance everyone was waiting for. Thanks to Jad at Three Pints for pointing us in the right direction (He also has mp3's of the performance!). From my good friend Drew who had never heard or seen the Arcade Fire before -

"anyhow, the lead singer had "sak vide pa kanpe" on his guitar in
silver tape. check this out:

"In Creole there is a proverb which says 'Sak vide
pa kanpe.' It means 'An empty sack cannot stand up.'

though you might want to blog about it??!?!?"

Hush records of the mighty Portland, OR are on a tear right now with some wonderful releases. Here are two of my favorites!

Loch Lomond began as the solo project of the very talented Mr. Ritchie Young. Through the past few years the group has grown into a six member band on a mission to bring chamber pop to the masses. Their exquisite new ep Lament For Children is out on the 25th.

You Better Look Out Below

As many of you know 2007 is in full swing and the musical selections so far have been outstanding to say the least. Here's a small mix of the songs I've been singing along to in the shower as of late.

1. "My Man My Moon" by Feist from the album The Reminder {mp3} [The Reminder is due May 1st. Look for a pre-order soon from insound]

Feist keeps us humming this time around with a bit of a glam rock romp. The guitar work and chorus are the perfect spring anthem.

2. "Dashboard" by Modest Mouse from the album We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank {mp3} [Pre-Order]

There are so many different ways this song plays itself...if that makes any sense. Anyhow I'm a fan of catchy songs and this one clicks without hesitation.

3. "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse from the album Back To Black {mp3} [Pre-Order]

I've always had a wish that the 50's and 60's would make a bit of a comeback through the mouth of someone new. I love it when sh*t comes true.

4. "Who Do You Love?" by Ted Leo & The Pharmacists from the album Living With The Living {mp3} [Pre-Order]

Nothing like Ted & the Pharms to get your fist pumping at 6 in the damn morning. Is it just me or does Mr. Leo sound rather endearing when he croons Who Do You Love? (Taken down by request)

5. "Keep The Car Running" (live at Judson Church) by The Arcade Fire from the album Neon Bible {mp3} [Pre-Order]

An Arcade Fire song to make you dance? Why the hell not. The vocal delivery is spot on and the song gets your heart pumping at just the right speed - aka the beats that let you know you're alive. Why is this not the single in America?

Devin Davis covers Kermit

Saturday, February 17, 2007 2 comments

It's true that I'm a sucker for covers, and this one is no exception. Devin Davis is currently finishing up the follow up to the brilliant "Lonely People of the World, Unite!". The album (tentatively titled: Up the OutSkirts') should be released later this year.

Here's a post from Devin via his myspace page:
Devin writes...

" Just sitting here (indoors) working on the new album (enjoying the wonderful Chicago winter). I thought I'd post an mp3 that I had meant to put up for a long time... "Rainbow Connection".. a song by one of my favorites.. Kermit the Frog. The tune was recorded during my month long residency at Chicago's beloved Hideout in February '06. The board recording disc of the show surfaced during my move that I made last month so I thought I'd share it with you. Recorded on our (crudely titled) "country night" of our residency (ie: acoustic guitar, harmonicas, pedal steel etc.), I was accompanied by Nick Mazzarella on the Hideout's house piano, and Jim Duffy on the drum set, and played acoustic guitar and theremin myself.
Anyway, it's back to fiddling with arrangements followed by more fiddling.
Hope you enjoy the song."

Nothing You Can Sing That Can't Be Sung

Two new cover songs that I'm crazy about. Maybe you'll be too.

"Love Reign Over Me" by Pearl Jam (Who Cover) {mp3} [BUY PEARL JAM]
I'm not sure how they've done it but Pearl Jam now have the ability to sound as they did in 1993 while never losing the rich dexterity of their knowledgable 2007 self. This cover is epic to say the least and I recommend that everyone out there give it at least one go. Vedder has never sounded more intense as Matt Cameron delivers on every level possible.

"All You Need Is Love" by Rogue Wave (Beatles Cover) {mp3} [BUY ROGUE WAVE]
In my book Rogue Wave our 2 for 3 with recorded covers (Everyday owns while Debaser falls). The song drives like a heartbeat on a mission with Zach Rogue's impeccable voice addressing the simple truth in just the right tone. Put it on and sing along.

One Night To Speed Up Truth

Tuesday, February 13, 2007 2 comments

To cap off this year Valentine's mix I've chosen three songs that look to lean hard enough on their own memories in order to live through the reality of today. With the mix complete is there anything we left out? A thought or idea that should have been touched on? Either way I'm very happy with the outcome and hope a few of you out there were able to relate in one way or another.

"Heartbeats" by Jose Gonzalez from the album Veneer {mp3} [BUY]
A cover of The Knife song, Gonzalez gives you that feeling that the night is rushing forward and you only have so much time in the rest of your life to catch it.

"Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" by Stars from the album Set Yourself On Fire {mp3} [BUY]
Setting yourself on fire is the perfect way in which to strip yourself to the core and begin to grow again in new ways and directions. Stars succeed in their honesty and creation of times and places that are real. "Live through this and you won't look back". Amen.

"The Trapeze Swinger" by Iron & Wine from the In Good Company Sdtrk {mp3} [BUY]
Walt and I believe this to be one of the best songs ever written due to its beautiful guitar line, spine-tingling back-up vocals, and tremendous atmosphere. I've never played this for someone and had them not like it. It somehow even makes you remember the worst of times in a new light that both calms and shines.

Sound As Ever

Monday, February 12, 2007 0 comments

Track A Tiger have just finished the recording of their new album and were kind enough to send me some tracks. The record title to be may sound Yo La Tengo-ish but no where near as much as these new songs. Bad thing? Not by a long shot. "All These Accidents" may be my favorite with its refreshing lead guitar and galloping drums. Which is yours?

"Saint About To Fall" by Track A Tiger {mp3}

"All These Accidents" by Track A Tiger {mp3}

From the band's myspace -
"The new record is mixed and going off to mastering this week. The tentative title is "I Speak To You With a Single Heart." Too Yo-La-Tengo-ish? We'll see if it sticks.

Our friend Kristina Castañeda sang on nine songs. We can't get enough of her. Others have also added their talents - Kristian Svennevig (strings), John Peacock (pedal steel), Anna Steinhoff (cello), Jeff Wichmann (trumpet), Steve Isadore (percussion), and Nitya Viswanath (spoken word French). "

Please Let Me Find Out

artwork by Zachary Flagg

We've all had our share of crushes. These selections hint on the excitement, as well as the disillusionment, of the crush.

"Minneapolis" by that dog. {mp3} [BUY]

Here’s a simple story of a chance encounter that has some of the most beautiful/complex harmonies ever. This is sort of the sister track to Justin’s Weezer choice. I f’ing LOVED this song back in the day and it feels good to resurrect it here in the Valentines Day mix.

"Crush On Everyone" by Onelinedrawing {mp3} [BUY]

This track illustrates the feeling you get when you first meet someone that you’re completely smitten with. Jonah hit upon that obsessed feeling of finding out all of your crushes interests, dislikes, and habits.

"Megan" by Smoking Popes {mp3} [BUY]

What’s a Valentines Day mix without Smoking Popes? This is a track of their Destination Failure record, which is one of my favorite albums of all time. Everybody can relate to the dreadful feeling you get when you’re waiting for your certain someone to appear. Be it at the Airport/Bus Station, those minutes can certainly feel like hours.

"Spangle" by The Wedding Present {mp3} [BUY]

This one also deals with that waiting period. Sitting by the phone, hoping for the best but expecting the worst. I’m not sure if this should be on the mix since it deals with the dreaded breakup phone call, but something told me it belonged here. Jimmy eat world has a cover of this that I highly recommend you track down. The quivers in his voice make the original plan heart wrenching.

"Carried Away" by Hayden {mp3} [BUY]

Trying to convince someone that their significant other is totally wrong for him or her is no easy task. Here Hayden gives that person some much needed advice that might not be easy to hear, but equally necessary. If you’re not familiar with Hayden and you like what you hear, you should definitely get acquainted with his albums. He’s truly incredible.

Make Me Blush & Drive Me Wild

These little tunes bring up that issue of chemistry and how exciting early naive love can be. Especially after our experiences have beat us down a bit, it's amazing to meet a new person who kicks off all the cobwebs from those crazy butterflies in your stomach.

"Fool Says" by M. Ward from the album Transfigurations of Vincent {mp3} [BUY]
Thanks to my good friend Jody, M.Ward quickly reminds us why we're all here. To feel your heart balloon and your stomach turn in that moment when you realize how much you like someone. Here's to the romantic fool....

"Susanne" by Weezer from the Mallrats Sdtrk {mp3} [BUY]
"Even Izzy, Slash, and Axel Rose, when I call you put them all on hold" belts Rivers Cuomo as he sings his heart out to the girl he loves. I felt the mix needed a bit of rock and the Weez turns the amps up to perfection in one of the best/fun love song b-sides I've ever heard.

There's a Question I Must Ask

Friday, February 09, 2007 0 comments

Artwork from Studio Cyen

Two more songs to help you get through February 14th. Seemingly simple songs of devotion which try to shed some light on why we do the things that we do for/to each other. Each song is structured as a list of questions to a loved one. Although the songs have entirely different tones (you know what i mean; thematic, not musical) both are about the doubt that we face and how we deal with that. The first is about regrets, the second about the need for an avowal from the one you love. I know I've had problems with both. Enjoy.

"Two People Blue" by The Hated from The Desmond Outcast 7" {mp3} [BUY]
I listened to this song a lot once. Sorry about the quality, it was recorded from the record.

"Three Questions" by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy from Master and Everyone {mp3} [BUY]
I just recently got into Will Oldham, in any of his numerous incarnations, when a friend left a mix at my house. I think this song is really pretty. I hope you do to.

This Feels Like Love But On Crack

Thursday, February 08, 2007 0 comments

artwork by Kai Althoff

This pair of songs is all about the declaration. The moment that no matter what is happening or has happened, you lay it all out in one honest go. I love how these songs take how much we all build up and tear it right down to the ground.

"I'm The Man Who Loves You" by Wilco from the live album Kicking Television {mp3} [BUY]
Tweedy almost speaks as much with his guitar as he does with his words in this rocking live version. An announcement to all this song somehow manages to emulate that feeling of being crazy in love with someone and not giving a damn who knows it. The guitar line gives me butterflies just like...well you know what I'm saying.

"Don't Ever Change" by Pink Nasty from the album Mold The Gold {mp3} [BUY]
I've written about this song before so of course I have no problem talking about it again. Possibly the best duet "love" song I've ever heard Pink Nasty takes it up a notch for this one. Moving through how love can come and go between two people the song has no quarrels about how f*cked we all really are. Just kidding...but seriously come on.

Could it be true, that Someone is you

Wednesday, February 07, 2007 1 comments

*artwork by Caroline Hwang

For my first contribution to the Valentines Day mixtape, I choose 2 songs that are probably my all-time favorite “love” inspired tunes which are sort of companions of each other. Both have found their way onto numerous love/relationship mixtapes, and both oddly are sung by guys named Jeff.

"I Want Someone Badly" by Shudder to Think (featuring Jeff Buckley) {mp3} [BUY]

This comes from the 'First Love, Last Rites' Soundtrack which Shudder to Think composed all of the songs for. Above all others, I feel that this one really highlights Buckley's stunning vocal range. If you haven't tracked down this film and its awesome soundtrack, you need to. This also could have easily been written by Phil Spector.

"I Love How You Love Me"
by Neutral Milk Hotel (live Phil Spector Cover) {mp3} [BUY]

Jeff Mangum's fragile voice on this cover forces you to believe in every word. It's been covered by a ton of folks, but I'll always hold this version close to my heart.

Ended Up Just Holding Your Hand

Tuesday, February 06, 2007 2 comments

The Valentines Day Mix continues. For my first contribution I've picked two of my personal favorites. Both are about the fun and excitement that relationships can bring, regardless of how they work out in the end.

I figured about half of you out there are happy to have your very own someone to spend V-Day with. As for the rest of you...well, we've all been there. So the first track is for you giddy lovebirds who think you finally found it and the second is a nice little lament on why it never quite seems to work out in the end. You're bound to relate to at least one of them.

"This Will Be Our Year" by The Zombies from Odessey & Oracle {mp3} [BUY]
Up there with all time greatest songs ever. Seriously, if you havent already obsessed over this song at some point in your life then get ready to hit the repeat button for the next 3 months.

"Everything I Try to Do, Nothing Turns Out Right" by The Decemberists from Billy Liar EP {mp3} [BUY]
I dont know why Colin Meloy and Company never found a spot for this on any of their full length albums. Not a happy song, but somehow Meloy is successful in reminding us of how much fun this whole damn thing is even if it never turns out how we planned it. "The film was a bust but we stayed till the ending/Hair all a mussed but your clothes didnt look so bad" That is the line that first grabs you and it only gets better from there.

P.S. The artwork for this particular post was made by our very own Justin Pierce. If you like what you see and are interested in more check out his other blog or just drop him a line here at The Mixtape. You know you need some art, you know he needs some money, make it happen.

When There Is Nothing Left To Burn You Have To Set Yourself On Fire.

The boys and I here at the mixtape felt it was time to put another tape in your hand (you know it was hard to put away that christmas mix). Of course the best mixtape holiday of the year happens to be next week so here we are to get you in the spirit. The songs on this "tape" all have to do with the subject of love in some way, shape, or form depending on all our seperate experiences up to this point. These songs all speak to ideals/ideas that we feel to be...substantial to the trials of love and heartbreak. Do yourself a favor and crack open that beer while you either make your top five list of all time break-ups or simply list the things you love about someone. Just make sure these songs play like a scrapbook in the background.

"Fell Down The Stairs" by Tilly and the Wall {mp3} [BUY]
"Love, just like blood will always stain" is the line that sums this first track up for me. Brings the tumble of a relationship into brighter, honest light.

"I'll Come Running Back To You" by Sam Cooke {mp3} [BUY]
Just about this whole damn tape should be Sam Cooke and you all know it. Yet, I like to mix things up so we'll save that one for another day. Pretty much the tops in terms of coming to terms with what you've done and where you want to go. At the moment I'm singing this song to myself everyday. I can't wait for the moment where it becomes the past and not the present.

Tracklisting:
01. 3 Times And You Lose
02. Selfish Jean
03. Closer
04. Big Chair
05. Battleships
06. Eyes Wide Open
07. My Eyes
08. One Night
09. Out In Space
10. Colder
11. New Amsterdam

"Closer" by Travis {mp3}

Andrew's new album, "Armchair Apocrypha" is out on March 20! You can pre-order the album from Fat Possum (North America only).

"Heretics" by Andrew Bird {mp3}

Two songs I've been playing quite often the past few days. I've always liked Travis but sometimes they drift into elevator music territory for me. This track + the catchy "Big Chair" are keeping me interested. Andrew Bird definitely marches to an unusal beat that has really grown into something exceptional. Add these to your huge list of anticipated releases this spring.
