and we're back.

Akron Civic Theatre
The Black Keys / Beaten Awake / Jessica Lea Mayfield

It's always an adventure every December when I make my way back up north to drink with friends, see family I never speak to, and hand out presents. Christmas 07 delivered one extra present this year from my good buds Beaten Awake in the form of all access passes to the sold out Black Keys show at the Civic for me and my pops.

Opening the show was young music phenom Jessica Lea Mayfield (aka Chittlin'). Standing all by her lonesome Mayfield opened the show with her powerfully deep voice and single acoustic guitar. Singing songs mostly on the subject of teenage love she immediately commanded your attention with her wry lyrics and compelling delivery. Joined later in her set by her ragtime band consisting of family members and Dan Auerbach Mayfield created a swirling cyclone that completely left the crowd in a trance. Lookout for a full length from her in 08!

Filling out the middle slot Beaten Awake ruled the night with their witty banter and exciting new arrangements. Wearing every piece of Cleveland sportswear he owned Jon Finley wailed like no other instrument that night (except maybe Auerbach's ridiculously amazing guitar set-up). Playing hits from their 2006 effort Let's Get Simplified as well as new jams (planned for an 08' release) the boys held their own in the capacity theater.

Let me just get this out before I finish here.....The Black Keys are the loudest tightest two man rock band out there....period. I have never in my life heard a bass drum that thunderous. Pat Carney plays like a man possessed as Dan Auerbach hits the Jimmy Page stratosphere. Not only have they become the well oiled tin men live, but their new songs from the upcoming release Attack & Release are on par to own everyone in the year 2008. If you haven't yet, read here for the scoop on the boy's upcoming record and tour. I have spoken to a few people that have heard it and the main consensus seems to be that no one will ever be able to look at The Black Keys the same way again. Who's excited? Come On!
