A Bee Has Got To Sting
Thursday, May 15, 2008 3 commentsA few new tunes I've been bumping to as of late.
"My Only Offer" by Mates Of State from the album Re-Arrange-Us {mp3} [BUY]
The new Mates of State has an ease and confidence that lifts it up and away from their previous work. Kind of like a children's song for grown-ups this tune has a terrific rolling beat that you'll hum for hours.
"Going On" by Gnarls Barkley from the album The Odd Couple {mp3} [BUY]
I love the new Gnarls. Much better and consistent than the first in my opinion. Wonderfully raw 60's drums ride sidecar to Cee-Lo's lively delivery on this bumping number.
"The Country Life" by The Silver Seas from the album High Society {mp3} [BUY]
What's up 70's?!? Do you still rock? Oh hell yes you do.
"The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" by Weezer (edit) original version on The Red Album {mp3} [BUY]
Alright, we can all fight forever about how Weezer sucks now and that they will go down in history as the band that made two amazing albums and then completely blew it. I completely understand this sentiment but don't fully subscribe to it. I believe Rivers and the gang have still done a few fun things here and there and with each subsequent album I give them a fresh pair of ears. On their new self-titled red album I'm afraid we are again treated to a mixed bag of treats (see also every album since Pinkerton). Here a good friend of the Mixtape (we'll just call him the wolf) has edited down Weezer's new single to cut out the terrible beginning to a possible(y) great song. Clocking in at just under 6 minutes on the album Greatest Man is a rollicking adventure through several "types" of music. Here we are left with a Weezer that bridges both the old and new aspects of itself in a tune that is really nothing but pure fun. Hopefully the b-sides will kick as much A as this edited tune does.
Have a great WeeKend!
